replaced new parts and lawnmower still want start

I was given a toro model 20444 4.5 GTS2 that wouldn't start. the spark plug was getting no spark. I replaced the coil and spark plug. and carb gaskets. The gap was set to a business card and also I did it with a gage of .010 It still has no spark. I have put over 30 bucks into trying to get it started. It's not the money issue but the frustration of trying to figure out what's wrong. Can anyone help?

If you only spent $30 on it, you probably bought an aftermarket coil. Good luck with that... they usually don't work long, if they even work right out of the box. At least not in my experience. Try the kill wire trick Geo mentioned. If still no spark, did you put the coil on upside down?

You can look up your toro at http://www.toro.com/, which specifies that the point gap is .030.

Also I tend to agree with the suggestion that you may merely have the engine being grounded out via the lever that must be held against the handle for the mower to start or run.

This shouldn't have points according to my look-up of the model. The coil/armature air gap should be .010" as he set it.
