Briggs Vanguard motor will not throttle up

I have a Briggs vanguard motor 28Q777-0691-E1. It starts and idles fine but will not rev up very well. It acts like it is hitting a governor or something. I have replaced the fuel pump and replaced the electrical plug at the bottom of the Carburetor. If I reach in and try to rev it with the throttle it revs up but is just flat. any suggestions?

If you're opening the throttle directly by hand and it's going nowhere, it's probably a fuel supply issue. It could be before the carb or inside it.

If you have a fuel pump, disconnect the fuel line from the carb and spin the engine over. Catch the fuel in a jar so you can see how much it's pumping.

If no pump, then disconnect the line and check it for a full stream. If it's just a trickle, work your way back up to the fuel supply and check for obstructions or a plugged filter.

If you have a good flow to the carb, you'll have to take the carb off and clean it.

Removing flywheel to replace key

New to this forum. I've searched and read several threads about this but I need help for my specific problem. Item: Craftsman Mid-Engine Electric Start 30" Mower/Mulcher Hydrostatic Drive model 5363.270320 (Riding mower) Engine: Briggs & Stratton model 21B807-3026-E1 Problem: Flywheel turns but engine won't start. Started acting up in beginning of season with intermittent stalling. Now no longer stats at all. Having read previous posts I'm almost convinced the flywheel key is sheared (item 24 p/n 222698s). I've got gas in the carb and the fuel solenoid is operational. I'm quite sure I'm getting spark. My problem is getting the flywheel off. The plastic fan on top of the flywheel is held on with a bolt (not a nut). How do I prevent the fly wheel from rotating? I noticed an approximately 3/8" dia hole in the side of geared flywheel that is exposed as if a steel rod can be used to insert and hold as a counter pry against the socket wrench. But, I have no place to wedge the rod against. Is this is what that hole is for? Can I get a helper to hold the bar while I try to loosen the bolt? Or is that hole just a machined hole to balance the flywheel? Since I'm not absolutely convinced that the key is sheared I'm reluctant to buy special tools that I'll never used again.Read More

Is it just me, or does anyone else tend to believe that riding mowers are designed and built just a little bit more complex than necessary? What is the sense in having an ignition key when the manufacturer makes them with one key fits all. Exactly how many people actually need headlights to cut grass, but how many riding mowers can you find on the market that does not include them? Have you ever worked on a riding mower transmission, or had to replace any of the gears? There is a gear in a Husky mower that I had one time that had broken teeth that would cost over a hundred bucks to replace, not including what it would cost to replace the other gears that had been damaged by the one with the broken teeth. A lawn mower is a tool to be used to mow grass, not a luxury vehicle that someone is going to use to get across town with, unless you’re drunk and can’t find your truck keys. You really need to try and keep the grass cuttings cleaned from the underside of the deck to reduce rust, but exactly how many riding mowers are made that do not take thirty minutes to remove the deck so that it can be cleaned properly, and another twenty minutes to put the darn thing back on. You’ve been out in the heat cutting grass for three hours, and eating weeds for another hour, who wants to take another hour to remove the deck from the mower for cleaning? And you have what, maybe two useful attachments that you can put on it for something other than mowing grass? There is no PTO that would accept something like maybe a tiller, or maybe a broom. So you wind up spending from one up to eight thousand dollars for a piece of equipment that you use once every week to ten days for 6 to 8 months out of the year. And no use whatever for anything except taking up space for the rest of the time. And if you don’t winterize it before storing it till next year, you are subject to have to pay for repairs of some sort next spring. And those repairs are not going to be cheap, cause those mowers are becoming more and more complex to work on. And less reliable in many instances. It just seems to me that the manufacturers intentionally design those mowers more complex and with more features than are necessary for the sole purpose of jacking up the price to the consumer.Read More
