MTD Series 661 12HP/38" Cut can't get mower deck to release from chassis

"The Pain has returned with another situation." I have a MTD Series 661 Yard Machine that I have removed all the "Hair Pins" from the supports but still the deck won't drop loose so I can replace the two belts on the unit and sharpen the blades. I checked the old manual, it shows that the deck should have released. I'm wondering if I have to drive the rear support rod out with a punch and hammer liike that witch was done on the older 400 Series. Anyone with advice would be deeply appreciated. I'm trying to get everything ready to put away for the Winter.

Hello LJD32013,


If this machine (no model number posted) has the stamped steel plate going from the back of the deck to the frame, Yes..... The rod must be removed to drop and pull the deck out.....

Greetings 31YTech - Just read your reply this PM. Yesterday I got impatient and went ahead and drove the rod out. I'm working on restoring it I found that because of all the hanging linkages you need to use two floor jacks to raise it high enough to clear the whats hanging in order to roll it out from under. It's interesting to me to see that they could have improved a number of things had they only installed simple grease fittings.
Thank you for your assistance. The manual I had was lacking any mention of this in writing and din't refere to the figue 17 to explain what the stabilizer was or how to remove it. It seams that some tech writer missed a bit when and if he/she proof read the manual. Again thanks.
