B&S engine on Troybilt mower won't start
Mower will not crank normally. With the air filter removed, if I spray carb cleaner into the carb, after 3 pulls the engine will crank for 3 or 4 seconds and die. Any suggestions?
Engine family: 9BSXS.1901VH 278643
Displacement: 190cc
DOM: October 2009
Serial: 0910305897322
Thanks!

Have you dumped out all the fuel in case there is water or crud in the tank? If it has a fuel bowl under the carb, take that off and dump it out too. Mark it with a marker to ensure you put it back on exactly the same way as before. Gently operate the float and see if the needle goes up and down. Spray a little carb cleaner on the needle. Put it back together. Refill with clean fuel and try again.
Don't change any of the settings on the needle valve or air/fuel.

I have not replaced the fuel, although I let someone else be the first one to try to use it after a winter of being stored. He said that gas was leaking out from the carb / air filter area. Now it's not leaking, but it's not cranking either. I will try what you suggest and let you know what happens. Thanks.

When you say "cranking" do you mean running or pull over/runs?
If it runs for that long on starter fluid, which by the way, you should not use and if so in only very moderate amounts, (dribble a bit of gas instead) AND if it was noticed leaking fuel from the carb/airfilter, I would check the needle valve/float. Sounds like it could be sticking. If your air filter is paper and smells of gas, you might want to replace it also.
