Tehcumseh quit running
My Lawn Boy mower is powered by a Tehcumseh 4.5 (5?) HP engine, model LEV100 series 345000. Before the first run this Spring, I drained the old oil and refilled with 18 ounces of Briggs and Stratton 4 cycle oil. The machine can for about 15 minutes and suddenly stopped.
Thinking I might have underfilled the sump, I added several more ounces of 30 weight the next day and primed her manually (gas in the spark plug hole).
She ran on the prime and stopped.
I cleaned off the carb, speculating that I might have to open the bowl and look for a stuck needle valve. Then I noticed that when I cranked oil oozed up out of the base of the filler neck, when the dip stick assembly was removed. In other words, the oil level is flush with the top of the metal lip of the engine filler hole.
What do these symptoms suggest about the cause of the problem? Should I drain some more oil?

Get the correct amount of oil in the machine as per the dipstick. It sounds like the no run condition is fuel related. Check the fuel filter, possibly a clogged screen in the fuel tank and lastly the carb might need a cleaning.

disk in carburetor bowl
Cheese correctly pointed to a fuel delivery problem. I replaced the gas line, which was spongy (from Ethanol?) but that was not the main problem. At the bottom of the metal fuel bowl was a 10mm concave metal disk. It should have been pressure fitted into the top (underside) of the chamber, right below the primer bulb. It is possible that engine vibration rattled this disk and when it slipped down, the fuel stream was interrupted.
The gurgling oil came up because a rubber sleeve-gasket had dropped down and out of position to seal the metal rim of the fill pipe.
In answer to your question, the oil is viscous enough to drip from my finger, and no, it did not smell like gas, although with all all these gas drips, I could not easily detect the gasoline odor.
Thank you for your diagnosis, Cheese. Bravo fromaggio!
