Swapping Tecumseh carbs
Hi, I've got a Tecumseh LEV80 3.5 hp lawnmower. It requires a carburetor Tec-640270. I would like to know if I could substitute a Tec-640271 carb. (I can get the Tec-640271 a lot cheaper). They look pretty much the same and use mostly the same parts except the Tec-640271 has a carburetor tube (not the emulsion tube) sticking through the air intake throat side of the carb and also there is a fitting on the top of the carb right at the air intake side of the carb. The Tec-640270 doesn't have these. What is the purpose of that carb tube and that fitting on top of carb? As long as the carb physically matches up and bolts in place, will it work? Thank you.

There is a lot more to a carb than bolt pattern. Throat diameter (CFM), jet size, throttle connections, etc... make a difference. I doubt anyone will know if you can put one in place of the other, as it's not something that there is a interchangeability guide for or anything like that. If they both are used on a similar sized engine, then chances are it will at least run if everything connects the same.
