White oil residue on engine filter

I have a generator that I just check the air filter. It has a white residue the look and consistency of whole cream. Just a small amount around one edge of the sponge oil soaked filter and a bit on the bottom tray where the filter rest in its housing. The unit runs fine and smooth. I hardly ever need it but I run it about once every three months or when I think of it. The last oil change was in September of 2012. The oil still looks clear like the day I put it in. Gas is treated with stabilizer. I suspect its detergents leeching out of the sponge filter. Any thoughts? I never noticed this before on any engine be it car or appliance. Do I need to change the oil?

I'd clean and reoil the filter ... maybe keep an eye on it but as long as the engine oil isn't milky I wouldn't be overly concerned
