John Deere 214 won't speed up..Kohler 14 hp

I bought a John Deere 214 that the previous owner was using until it developed a problem. He said he was using it until it died and wouldn't start back up. He replaced the ground strap that was broken. I thought maybe the flywheel key was sheared. I got it home and it would run as long as I had the throttle at 1/3 throttle speed or below. I rebuilt the carb and put in new gas. It ran the same. So I'm thinking now it must be an ignition problem. When I try to take the throttle to 1/2 or above, it spits ,sputters, backfires and dies. It will start back up as long as I put the throttle back down. It runs smooth at the low idle.

Thank you for any advice

John Deere model number C214F 073268
Kohler engine K321AQS, Spec 60311d, serial 7605139

Have you replaced the points and condenser?

That was another question I had. I don't see any points on it. I thought they were on the outside of the engine near the coil. All I see is a coil and condenser.

On a K341 the points are directly under the governor arm - exhaust side - under the outermost cap on the outside of the engine.

Thanks for leading me to the points. They looked good. I gapped them and lightly sanded them. Still ran the same. Swapped out the condenser with a spare one I had from years ago. Started up and runs great now. Just mowed with it. Thank you!!
