Kohler Engine Blowing Smoke

I have determined thru taking the cylinder head off and measuring the bore and finding an .030 replacement piston in this engine, that I probably need new rings. The kohler distributor told me I had to take the piston out to determine what the replacement piston type was before we could determine the correct replacement ring. I do not want to damage the base of this cast iron engine when removing it, and it is REALLY on there. What can I do to quickly and safely remove this engine base? Will a gasket remover penetrate it far enough to release the seal?
Comments?

Usually a sideways blow with a hammer will break the gasket loose. Not so hard that you risk breaking something, just a sharp blow.

You Da Man Cheese. Popped off the base with a few well placed taps. Now I need to clean off the ridge at the top of the cylinder and remove the piston;

Thanks for the tip!
