B&G Starting but not Running

I have a Briggs and Stratton Mower engine, model #42A707, in a MTD riding mower. I can get it started with starting fluid, but it will not continue to run. The parts list shows a 3 screw fuel pump, but I am not sure how it works or if it is the problem. I have cleaned the carb, gas lines, fuel tank, and replaced the fuel filter. Any ideas why it will not keep running? Any help is appreciated.

Thanks!

Hello mooreddm,

After cranking over or starting with fluid, You can tell if the fuel pump is functioning by removing the large plug on the lower side of the float bowl. If fuel pours out say 2-3 ounces it's working, If you remove the plug and just a little fuel dribbles out it's time for a new pump rebuild kit.

If fuel does pour out as above, You still have a restriction in the main jet or main circuit within the carb body.

Be careful when installing a new pump kit, The small brass looking springs must stay in place. I use a small dab of grease on the plastic pins to hold them in place during re-assembly.

Good Luck
