B&S engine is backfiring, wont start
WHAT IS THE EQUIPMENT
Engine
NAME BRAND OF YOUR ENGINE
Briggs and Stratton
WHAT MODEL NUMBER IS YOUR ENGINE
130202-0347-01 5 hp. Made in 1971
CLEAR DESCRIPTION OF WHAT IT IS DOING, WHAT IT DID PRIOR TO THE PROBLEM, AND WHAT YOU HAVE DONE TO TROUBLESHOOT IT SO FAR.
Engine was pulled from a Tote-Gote. It has sat for who knows how long - I picked up the Gote and engine at a yard sale.
I've pulled the gas tank and cleaned it, pulled the carb and cleaned it, added a clutch ball bearing (takes 6, came with 4, added one, need another.)
There is no washer between the cover ratchet and the case, but unsure is any old washer will do, and the required clearances. As many of you will know, the ratchet cover must be free to come open a certain amount - but it comes out so far I am losing my ball bearings.
Engine tries to start, it burns the starting fluid, but it will not 'catch'. Every once in a while, the muffler emits some awesome flame, and about 3 - 5 pulls after spraying starting fluid into the carb, it backfires out the carb.
At this point, I know I need to add/replace all the throttle linkage springs, and determine the air cleaner it needs. Turning into a learn about small engines as I go project. Money is no object, I reckon I'll get my moneys worth in knowledge.
I'd like a really good exploded parts diagram, and a how to on the throttle linkage. Experts chiming in with any helpful websites or manuals would be awesome.

Hello Deayel, and welcome.
From your description of what you've done and what it's doing, I would suspect the flywheel key is sheared. There should be a washer between the clutch and flywheel, and any that fits well and is fairly thick will do. Make sure to tighten the clutch very tight or the flywheel key will shear again.
Those engines came with several different carburetor linkage configurations. I'm not sure if there are pictures of that in the manual or not. I'll have to dig out the old briggs book and see if it has pictures of the different linkage setups.
