Kohler 18 hp will not start

I have a SV540s Kohler 18 hp single cylinder engine that will not start unless i spray either gas or starter fluid in carburetor. It runs great after that and will restart on its own UNLESS i let it set for too long, then i have to prime it again. NEW carburetor, fuel pump, spark plug, solenoid on carb, am at a loss. Compression is 71 lbs.

Anyone got any idea what is causing this?

Sounds like your choke isn't closing all the way.

choke is working fine. new carb. i work on mowers and this one has me stumped.

Can you see the choke butterfly in the throat of the carb hitting the sides of the throat when it is closed? The reason I'm asking is because I have had to fix this on several of these so far. There is a phillips screw on the linkage that adjusts this.

replaced needle and seat and now wont idle

i have a snapper rer, it has a briggs and stratton engine, model number 28B702-1154E1, with a gravity fed walbro carb. anyhow it has always ran fine but if you left the fuel shutoff valve on for a day or two gas would end up in the oil. so i figured i would finally fix it. bought a new needle and seat and took the carb off to replace those parts and sure was a bugger getting out that old seat. but i installed the new needle and seat and put it back together and it runs, but it is idling quite high, and runs rough, like sputtering. well im here cause i have no idea what to do now. needle not seating right? i dont know, ive seen it done before and i did the same thing as them, but for me it aint running right. but i just need it to idle again and run like it did before, so any ideas please let me know. thanksRead More

Craftsman riding mower won't shift

With my fix-it hubby in Africa for most of the summer, our Craftsman mower that he's been babying along has decided not to start. I'm no mechanic, but I'm willing and able to learn - I fixed our fridge last time he went out of town - just me and Google :). I'm wondering if this is a transaxle problem? It starts (but makes an intermittent grinding sound), and won't go forward or backward. At all. Like it doesn't even register that I'm moving the lever. Ideas? I'd love to impress him with a running mower and a trimmed lawn when he gets home. :)Read More
