Mower starts, after 1 time around yard, it dies...help

I have an older John Deere lawn tractor, sometime I have to jump start it. After 1 time around yard, It shuts down and will not start again. Can anyone help? Does the battery have to be charged for a lawn tractor to keep running?

If the battery is dead and no good, the alternator can't put out enough to overcome a shorted battery and keep the PTO engaged if it has an electric PTO.
