Speedaire compressor with Honda GX390 engine

I have a Speedaire compressor with Honda GX390 engine, it starts and runs good but when the compressor gets up to pressure it slams the choke back and kills the engine. I changed the throttle control cable and took apart and cleaned the pilot valve. Even tried to adust the pilot valve. It still does the same thing. Can anyone help. Thanks.

I think I'd slip the belt off and see if the engine will run at idle. It should kick the throttle to idle, not the choke, and it should unload the compressor, so the engine can idle once the pressure limit is reached. If it has carb problems, it might just be killing the engine instead of idling it. Could also be that the idle speed screw needs to be screwed in some.
