Prestige snowblower chute issue

I have a Simplicity Prestige tractor with a single stage snowblower that is roughly 3 years old. I mounted the snowblower yesterday to find that the electric motor that turns the chute was not working (I was able to use raise and lower the cutting height on the mower deck before I removed it). It looks like the exhaust from the motor melted the wires that run from the tractor to chute motor and possibly shorted something out. I separated the two wires, but the motor still does not run. Has anyone else encountered this problem? I suspect that the motor is burned out, but I am looking for any other possible cause. Any ideas before I spring for a new motor? Thanks!

Do you have a electrical meter, 12 volt test light or any way of testing for electricity?

I do not know that mower or snow blower but first I would check for a blown fuse. I doubt shorting the wires together killed the motor which in this case is a good thing. Trace the wires that burned all the way back to the battery. There's probably a burned out fuse, burned out or broken wire or switch.
