Briggs Engine codes
I have an old Snapper, early 80's I guess. Briggs engine. I feel sure the fly wheel cover has been changed. Are the codes stamped anywhere else on the 70's and 80's engines other than the flywheel cover?
Also, will a 12 hp flywheel cover fit an 8 hp Briggs from the late 70's or early 80's. Or was the 12 a larger block than the 8's?
Thanks in advance.

The 12 was larger than the 8 cover and will not fit. The number is usually stamped on the side near the exhaust. On newer ones, it's on a plate on top of the engine shroud or if it's an OHV engine, it's stamped on the valve cover.

Thanks, I told you wrong. The flywheel cover is from and 11hp. Today I removed the cover but didn't see any sign of any numbers. But, my eyes arn't as good as they once were.
Just for my education. On the old flat head Briggs. Did they use a slightly larger block for each horse power increase?
Thanks ih
