Briggs and Stratton generator problem

My generator has about 30 hours on it. It is about 4 years old. Worked fine last week, this week I have to field flash it with a drill every time to get it to put out power. Everything I have read seems like you should only have to do this once then you would be good to go. Is it time to replace the voltage regulator?

Wish I had an answer, I never had this happen. Normally the field polarity remains for a long time even without use... I'm not exactly sure how it could lose the residual magnetism that fast. Maybe another member who is more familiar with generators will reply. I wonder if a leaking diode could cause this problem.

What model is your generator?

If it has a capacitor, it may have failed.
