Replaced push rods: engine won't start now
Hi all. New to forum.
Briggs and Stratton 10.5 HP OHV Snowblower.
MODEL 20D114
TYPE 0695E1
Broke the exhaust push rod and bent the other. Replaced both rods and gaped to .005 with the feeler. (Said .004 - .006 online)
Plug has spark - visually confirmed. Piston seems fine - it's moving as I pull the cord. Seem to have some compression out the plug hole.
It turns over great now BUT It wont fire.
I read somewhere that I need to pull the cord until the plug sparks and then gap the valves? I also pushed on the valves themselves thinking maybe carbon deposits.
ANY help would be appreciated!

Hi. I may be mixing terms....It is a one cylinder, two valve...cover says OHV...not sure if that's the same as an overhead cam or not. I am not sure what caused one to bend an the other to break. I was using it in normal conditions and it just popped (not exhaust), and died.
I tried pulling it a few times (before I tore into it) and it basically wouldn't turn over...the busted rod probably. I may have damaged the other trying to start it before I know what was wrong.
I guess I'm not sure what to do after putting the push rods back in and gaping them...I figured it would fire right up. I wonder if I damaged something else now when the rod broke. I may put a new plug in it...maybe spark isn't "enough." Any suggestions? BTW THANK YOU for responding....

You said you replaced the push rods but did not mention finding what caused the rods to bend. Did you inspect the valves looking for a stuck valve?

Pilot Dane is on the right track... something caused the rod(s) to bend/break. Most likely one of the valves stuck or one of the valve guides slipped down and now is holding the valve partially open. Usually the latter. How did you determine it has compression?

Cheese, hi. I didn't, probably. I don't know what I'm talking about...air was coming out of the spark hole but I know that's not true compression.
If you scroll down to the OHV pic, when you say valve guides, are those what are labeled as such in this pic? It's what the valve stem is running through? IF so, is this a fix I can perform?

Yes, adjust the valves when the engine is in the correct position, then see if you have success. If not, take the plug out and put your finger over the plug hole and give the pull rope a pull. If it makes air blow past your finger, it has compression.
Reminds me of a story... while checking an engine for compression, this kid was told to put his finger on the spark plug hole while the engine was cranked and he was told to holler if it blew his finger off. His eyes got huge... he thought it literally meant blow his finger off, as in explosion!
