YardMachines 2 cycle snow blower doesn't throw snow through chute

Someone gave me a YardMachines 3.5 HP 2 cycle gas powered snow blower and I put a new belt on it but it doesn't often seem to throw the snow thru the chute. it will instead throw the snow forward in front of the machine instead of thru the chute. it will sometimes come out the chute but I can't figure out why. the blades turn ok and there are no clogs in the chute at all (probably since the snow rarely goes thru it). It almost seems to me that the blades are moving in the wrong direction to force the snow thru the chute, but is that even possible? There is only one way to put the belt on so that can't be the problem. I also tried pulling the cable even more than the handle will pull it, but it can't be any tighter than what it currently is. Shear pins are intact as well.

What model is it? Is it a two stage or single stage? If a single stage then yes it could be rotating in the wrong direction. If its a two stage is the impeller spinning?

It is a single stage. And the impeller does move. How can I try getting it to turn the other way if it is going the wrong way?

It's hard to offer specific advice unless you tell us what model machine you have.

What direction does the impeller currently rotate? I assume it's going in the correct direction since I can't think how you could make it go opposite.

How much clearance is there between the auger and the housing? If the rubber is missing or in bad shape that might make it perform badly.
