Ariens Sport Zoom 1232 PTO clutch
I have an Ariens Sport Zoom 1232 Model 915031 and the other day it just stopped dead while mowing. I found 2 fuses blown, replaced them and still it wouldn't even crank. After some investigation, I found the PTO clutch coil has almost zero resistance across it. From that, it appears that the clutch is fried, which blew the fuses and my PTO switch in the process. I have the switch ordered but here is the real problem...
I started looking for the clutch Ariens part No 52711900 and I almost went into shock! My local dealer wants $846 for the part. I think I found an online replacement for $399. Does anyone here know of a place I could get one for a more reasonable price? Most other models of Ariens clutches seem to be closer to the $200 mark. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

What is the resistance? Less than 3 ohms or more?
That's a pretty odd clutch, not one to find an alternative for easily. I think you're stuck getting that particular one or the Xtreme aftermarket one (lucky there is an aftermarket choice).

Resistance was less than 1 ohm. I got the deck and clutch off this afternoon and the clutch is definitely shot. The wires in the coil are frayed and one of the ball bearing assemblies scattered bearings all over the garage floor when removed. Is the Xtreme the only option other than the OEM?

I don't know of any other option. On some clutches, the part that holds the coil is the same an the difference is in the other end. Maybe you could take it by a mower shop and compare to some clutches they have on hand and find something cheaper to get that particular part off of. Another option would be to check with a motor repair shop and see if they could replace the coil in it and install a new bearing. I have replaced the bearings in these before with no problem. The coil is another story.

Update
I thought I would post an update to my situation in case someone else runs across the same problem. My clutch was a Warner mfg 5217-25 and I found a 5215-35 from Xtreme with the same coil part. I ordered that (which had the new bearing I needed as well) and replaced my coil with that and used the rest of the pieces from the old clutch and it all fit and my mower is back in service and working fine!
The end result from a cost perspective was as follows:
Cost from dealer or Parts Tree $746
Direct replacement from Xtreme $399
Cost by swapping out parts as described above $109
So, there is a way to save a bunch on this repair.
