mower cuts off

I have a poulan pro mower. Getting old has got me so I charged the battery and hooked it up on the wrong terminals. Didn't have my reading glasses on. When I engage the blades the fuse blows. Even disconnected the clutch and when I push the blade switch the fuse blows. Mower runs fine but cannot engage blades. Could solenoid be bad.

It sounds like something was polarized, in the opposite direction. I would try another battery before another solenoid. Buy it from a place that has a good return policy.

I would look at the harness near the connector to the clutch and see if there is a diode in line. If so, it probably overheated during the reverse polarity hookup and possibly melted the wires together in that area.
