Solenoid Clicks but Starter not Turning (MTD 42" 17.5 HP Riding Mower)
I'm trying to get a riding mower to start. The solenoid clicks when the key is turned, but the starter will not turn. Does this mean the starter is bad, or at least the solenoid is not bad since it's clicking?
Thank you

Perhaps I should ask my question a different way. I suppose the wiring going to the starter could be bad, so I will check the continuity, etc. But is it safe to assume the solenoid is good since it's clicking?

I had a solenoid last year whose electro-magnet would "click" but it didn't close the higher amperage circuit to the Starter . . . . and I had to re-build it (the Solenoid).
I also had a heavy cable that provided continuity; but it was corroded internally and couldn't carry the load necessary to drive the Starter. Left me scratching my head until I replaced the Cable.
So, all I'm saying is that you have to "double check" most of these items.
For you, jumping over the solenoid and going directly from the battery to the Starter might help you verify that the Starter is healthy (probably), and with the Ignition Switch "on", you might even start your engine.

Checked the battery, it should measure about 13.8 volts if it's charged.
Disconnected the cables and cleaned the lugs?
