Engine model needed. .005" is usually good for both valves on most engines.

When the piston is 1/4 inch past TDC on the compression stroke, remove the spark plug insert a screwdriver or something and to measure it. Have a good one. Geo

Correct, and be sure it's on the compression stroke, not the exhaust stroke.
.005" is good for both valves on that engine.

Still having problems! Is the intake on top or bottom I'm guessing Top. Hear is what i'm doing first intake open then the exhaust when it comes up to top dead center I adjust the values. then I even tried the other top dead center no matter what it sounds like it pinging starts hard

You want both valves closed to have the compression stroke. Then 1/4 past TDC and set clearances.

I suggest watching some you-tube videos about how to find TDC and how to adjust the valves. Getting it wrong can cost you internal engine problems.
