Sometimes dust and debris collects inside the cup part of the head and this keeps the spool from catching on the stops. Also if the spring is missing or in the wrong spot it would let the line out.

I noticed that the stops on the line reel are rounded off. I ordered a new spool thinking that might be the issue. The unit is close to 10 yrs old!!. Larry PS It is clean under the reel (spool).
