Lowes Brand Mower

I do not have a model number for a Lowes Brand Riding Mower a neighbor brought over. This mower has a 14.5 hp Briggs engine with a vertical crankshaft
and a 7 speed shift on the go, (no clutch) rear transaxle. Everything on this mower is held together with some 1" coil springs of varying lengths. The one that puts tension on the pulley that sits in the middle of the mower under the seat is about a foot long. It fastens in front under the center pulley, and when stretched out, connects to a hook that drops down under the frame in front of the transmission and drive assembly. I cannot stretch the spring with 70 year old arms holding vice grips to re hook it to the rear hook. There must be a process to do this safely. I think this mower was made for Lowes by MTD. Anybody know what I am talking about?

Yes, I know what spring you're talking about and it's chore for even a young man. Get a good length of pull rope and tie it into a big circle. Run it past the hook it connects to up to the spring, then pull on the rope. You can put a screwdriver or something like that in the rope to give you a "handle" to help pull the rope. As you pull it past the hook it connects to, guide it on to the hook or have someone help guide it there, then let off and untie the rope and pull it out.
