Hard to pull-start Kawasaki FC150V lawn mower engine

My father recently gifted us a well-maintained Snapper 21" walk-behind, self-propelled lawnmower with a Kawasaki FC150VK04408 5hp gas engine that's VERY hard to pull-start for me and our athletic 16-yo son; nearly impossible for my wife. Once started, it runs strong and doesn't smoke. It had sat unused for close to a year before it was given to us. Anyone have any ideas? Please advise. Thank you! -Mitch

How does it turn over with the spark plug out?

It could be the brake is not releasing all the way but still getting spark to the plug.

Try what Geo said if it is still hard to pull then it is likely the brake !!

Do you mean it is very difficult to pull the starting cord, or that the engine takes many trys to actually begin running?
