Blade engagement cable broke - again

In May of last year the blade engagement cable on my Bolens MTD lawn tractor broke near the engagement lever. At the time the tractor was not quite 9 years old. I replaced the cable back then and it broke again yesterday, in the same area. The lever feels normal, I wonder what could cause it to happen again so soon?

A cheap aftermarket part or rust and grass/dirt buildup on the deck keeping the engagement arm from moving easily.

I did clean the deck after, thought buildup of debris may have something to do with it. Will need to keep it clearer than I have been. As far as I can tell the brand of the cable is 'Genuine Parts', so it's certainly aftermarket. I wondered if that had something to do with it.

I think MTD parts come in a bag marked "genuine parts" with the MTD logo on it and green and white text and background.
