Question John Deere 180 tractor... help getting front wheel off

Looks like the rim has separated at a weld on one of my front wheels, so I need to remove it from the axle to see about getting it welded back together. Took the plastic cover and snap ring off, no problem. Now I can't slide the rim off the axle. It seems to be stopping at the outside of the snap ring channel. There a trick to this or do I need to take an angle grinder and smooth out any raised area of the axle there? This is a 30-year-old tractor and I've had this wheel off maybe once in those 30 years, so nothing would surprise me!

It should just slide off, so something is interfering.

I'd be using a flat file instead of a grinder, all it takes is a small burr or raised spot to stop it from sliding off.
