I posted last week about putting used motor on Huskee ( MTD) when the harness plugs didn't match. I thought I finally figure it out by matching the wires from the mower manual to the destination on the new motor as far as to Magneto, fuel solenoid and 2 to the alternator. I can't get the motor to run though. I have fuel to the pump. I can pour gas into the carburetor after taking the air filter cover off and the motor will start and run just until that fuel is gone and the motor dies. Does this sound like bad fuel pump or maybe I don't have the right wire to the carb solenoid and it's not allowing fuel into the carb? Any help will be greatly appreciated!

 

I would guess solenoid .

 

Your engine may have an anti-afterfire (anti backfire) solenoid on the carburetor. It needs to be energized to allow fuel to flow into the carburetor.

 

I think i have the carburetor solenoid hooked to the right wire. I can turn the key to the first notch to the right and you can hear the solenoid click and turn the key back to off and the solenoid clicks again.

 

Sounds like your carburetor is stopped up or the fuel pump hasn't pumped any fuel to the carb (if it has a pump at all).

 

The solenoid can go bad so even though it goes click it might not be retracting properly. One bush fix is to remove it and energize it to get the plunger to extend. You can also do this as a test to make sure it's working. While it's extended break or cut it off. Then reinstall the solenoid at which point it's just a plug to keep gas from pouring out. You will loose the anti-afterfire feature so you may get some "back firing" when you turn the engine off.

 

If it is clicking then there is no need to disable it. Remove it, and see if it retracts. If not spray it with some carb cleaner and work it in and out. It is spring loaded but can get gummed up.

 

I’ll take the solenoid off and check it. I’ve got to get a thin wrench to even take it off

 

I have used some small needle nose vice grips in the past. Now I have a couple 1/2" wrenches ground down.

 

I got it started! I took the fuel pump off to find that the little hose that goes into the top of the valve cover was cracked. I replaced it and swapped the fuel pump from my running mower and it started. My problem now is that it misses. I’m going to replace the spark plugs and see if that helps. I have thoughts I may not have the choke cable set exactly right?

 

You may also want to try some Seafoam in the tank, I have had success using it.

Tried New plugs and still misses at low throttle. Doesn’t seem to miss that I can tell at high throttle
