tecumseh on generator won't start

My generator didn't start when I needed it 2 months ago. I'm getting around to looking at it now. It has a Tecumseh OHH60 engine.

Got good spark, and put on a known-working ignition coil.
Put on a new, aftermarket carburetor. when I prime, i see fuel shooting up the little tube in the carb.
I checked under the OVH cap - valves and springs look good. the breather looks clean, and there is good pressure come out of the breather cover back into the carburetor.
I even disconnected the low oil switch.

I have fuel, air, and spark. But it won't even come close to turning over. I'll put starter fluid in the engine and it might go 1 or 2 extra revolutions, but that's it.

any ideas?

Have you measured compression?

Try removing the spark plug and put a teaspoon of gas into the cylinder. Reinstall the plug and try starting. If it fires and runs for a second then you've likely got a fuel/carburetor problem.

1) have not checked compression, although you can hear a lot of air squeeze in and out of the breather tube and cylinder exhaust.

2) put fuel in the spark plug hole, and the engine doesn't sound like ignition is really going on,
I've tried this with and without the air filter.

This is not looking good.
