Knocking noise

  • I have a craftsman dgs 6500 that I'm working on for someone. As you starting the tractor you can hear a knocking noise coming from the right side of the engine. The engine does start and run but it's pretty rough with a noticeable loss of power. It has a 26hp kohler in it. My thoughts are where the connecting rod connects to the crankshaft is it has got to be loose. Weather it's from wear or whatever its fitting loosely there. Any thoughts or ideas would be greatly appreciated before I start tearing into this thing. The owner told me that he uses this mainly for snow plowing.

"As you're starting the engine"... meaning while it's cranking? I would make sure the engine mounting bolts are tight. That's the source of knocking problems most of the time in my experience.

Thanks cheese. Yes while its cranking. Would that also explain the loss of power?

No, it wouldn't. Unless it was jarring so hard a plug wire shook loose but that's not very likely.
