I need some help with this?,I had a tecumseh 8 hp that I just could not get it to run smooth & got fed up with it and put a Briggs on it,No idea how to read the codes to find out how old this motor is. The #on the cover are, model 282707,Type 01101,code 9402214E power built 12 hp. I have changed carbs and eliminated the electronic fuel shut off, soaked it over night and new needle, will have to wait till Monday to get a full rebuild kit. but how do you tell if this carborator is the one for this unit,I cleaned the carb, and set it at 1-1/2 turns out and it revved out of control?so I shut it dawn immediately ,tried a different carb(same style)and got the revs down but then it had oil coming out the breather line.Am willing to do almost anything to get this working better.Thank You in advance for your help.I know there is a lot of things that rely on the carb being set right,If you know the valve settings I will set the valves,Just cant put my finger on it,need some help.

That should be a flathead engine, so no adjustments for the valves, The carb should look something like the one I'm linking to. A new aftermarket carb is cheap, so it might be worth grabbing one. If it's revving way up, that could be a linkage problem, a throttle shaft stuck, a bad governor, or mis-adjusted governor. I'd get a good carb on it and then if it still has problems, go deeper in that direction. The oil coming from the vent could be from it over-revving, or if the oil level is too full, or the oil is too thin, or excessive blowby from a worn out engine. Hopefully one of the former. The age of the engine is determined by the first two numbers of the code. It's a 1994.

Yeah I was just basically linking to the diagram to show what the carb looks like. I don't know if they are the best place to buy it from or not but if you google your engine numbers and the word carburetor, you will come up with loads of options for places to buy them.
