16hp briggs

I would like to know how a problem with an internal governor would act if it was going bad on a briggs 16hp motor

The carb wouldn't open up under load or, on the other end of things, it may over rev.

Post the engine model, type and code so someone can see what engine you are referring to, there are many 16hp Briggs. Have a good one. Geo

hi model is303777 Type 0411-21 code 91111211 I took this mower in because I was having trouble starting didn't want to turn over.I tried to adjust the lifters and end up bending a push rod. put a new one in and took it in .they told me that i had a bad governor and need a new engine. The engine is vibrating when running doesn't miss almost sounds like an exhaust leak at first.Been running it like that for some time.also the carb is opening under a load Thank Ken

If you bent a pushrod it means you set it too tight and without lash the cam did a job on the rod.

Reset the lifters at .005 clearance with the flywheel 1/4 inch past TDC. ( that means the piston is 1/4 inch down from the top of the cylinder). Then see how it runs.

Another thing that shows up here fairly often in a twin coil ignition are the diodes in the kill circuit. When defective it cause a cross firing in the ignition. That can be diagnosed by disconnecting the kill wires from the coils.

It's running well now and you attribute the problem to the spark plugs?

Yes and see what that does. Have you reset the valves?

Took off the ground wire seems to run better still has a vibration.question now what do i do with the ground wire.do i leave it off or put it back on .I did't readjust the valves thats why I took it in and they told me it was the governor they said they adjusted them. For some reason I just can't seem to get them right

Sorry I hadn't gotten back to this thread. If you know disconnecting the kill wires fixed it, the problem is in the diode in the kill wiring harness. You can just get a new harness with the diode.

Don't leave the kill wires disconnected as a fix, it's only for diagnosis. They are the way you kill the engine safely.
