John Deer 214 mower oil?

I have a 214 John deer mower that sat for over 10 years. Iíve gotten it to spark and Iím thinking I can get it running.

The manual says 30wt oil. Is it ok to use 10w 30 synthetic oil? I bought 30 wt non detergent oil but Iím wondering if I can use synthetic? Is there mower specific synthetic oil I can use?

I read somewhere about the valves being on top needing some sort of something in the oil.

Assuming this has an old cast iron Kohler, with an engine like that, I would tend to stick with the 30. The 10-30 may be a bit thin.

I've always run modern multi weight oil in my old engines without trouble.

The engine hadnít run in about 10-12 years. It sat in an open shed for 8 years and then is sat for a few years in a closed in shed. The engine was rebuilt once years ago. It had been used to dig a small tank, plow fields, mow fields, level roads. It thought itís life was over and then I came along and started fixing things. The wires were all chewed by rats. Hoses were all dry rotted. I rand a few new wires. Got a new carb, fuel pump, and fuel hoses. Put fuel in it and new oil and it started up!!! Smokes like crazy but seems to be good.
