Tracter battery won't stay charged

I have a Bolens 15 HP riding lawn mower. The battery will not stay charged and it is a new battery. It tries to start, but not enough battery power. I touched the alternator and it was hot. What is causing the problem?

Check voltage with the engine off, then with the engine running. That will tell you if it's charging or not. You can't touch the alternator unless you took the engine shroud off and removed the flywheel because it's under there.

The starter will heat up when it's being used, especially if overused.

Problem could be one of the following or any combination, battery, alternator, voltage regulator, starter solenoid ignition switch. It also might be a shorting wire in the wire harness. You should have a schematic and electrical meters to measure greater than 15 volts dc, 40 amps dc and continuity to troubleshoot the problem. What do you have?
