Jonsered 2754gthi drive belt keeps jumping off

We have the Jonsered 2754gthi mower, operated great, until it started throwing the belt off. I would get it back on, and in 5 more hours of mowing, it would do it again. Looked on several forum sites and found others having the same problem, mainly Husqvarna.
The belt finally broke, so order a new one. In taking it off, found one of the pulleys had froze up. So order it. One thing bothered me. The way the belt was put on, it had been rubbing on the steering shaft. When installing the new belt and pulleys, it made no sense!
. So I undid the steering shaft from the plate, pulled it up, allowing the belt to run on either side of it. I'll see if this fixes the problem.
Sounds like when it was being assembled, the steering shaft was in place, then the belt went on, not allowing it to sit on both sides of the steering shift.

I don't think that mower is sold in the US, but the Husqvarna equivalent is. I see the diagram for the belt on that mower and it's the same. The steering shaft does not go through the center of the belt, the belt goes right next to it though and may lightly brush it as is goes past, but should not rub hard on it.
