Welcome to the forums.
The Kawasaki FC540V is a 535 cc (32.65 cu-in) single-cylinder air-cooled 4-stroke internal combustion small gasoline engine with vertical shaft.
So what does four cycling mean ?

I'm wondering the same. The only definition I can imagine for that would be that it's running as it should since it's a 4 cycle engine, but the context used indicates that's not the case.

I believe your problem is heavy stress on the engine from the deck. Make sure your deck is clean and there is no junk in the pulleys. Also if your mower has a brake on the deck make sure it is disengaged while you engage deck. That is your first step. Still no idea what four cycling it though.

So you have an engine that dies when you engage the deck, but keeps running when you disengage the deck? Since it tries to keep running with the choke on it would indicate a fuel problem. Cleaning the carburetor is a good place to start.
I usually use Sea Foam as a starting point. You can get that in auto parts stores. Just follow the directions.

I agree with marbobj, I should have gone on to work that out but I got stuck on trying to figure out what it was doing.
