Cub Cadet 3X HD snow blower reverse not working
I have a Cub Cadet 3X 30" HD that I purchased last year. One issue I have is the reverse gear 1 does not work. If I switched to gear 2 it does work but slow. Has anyone experience this and how do I resolve it?
Thanks!

Unless it's a hydrostatic model, it's probably just an adjustment on the shaft that connects the gear shift lever to the internal mechanism. Adjust the shaft so that it moves the "lever" that it is connected to further in the reverse direction.

Charlie - I have the 3X 30 Max. It too is slow in reverse. That's probably a good thing. In my manual there is a shift rod adjustment procedure "If full range of speeds (forward and reverse) cannot be achieved . . . "
If all else fails the machine has a 3 year warranty.

cwbuff, I saw that information on the manual too; however, for reverse issue (like mine), do I shift the lever to the fastest backward speed position? Or do I still shift the lever to the fastest "forward" speed position?
Thanks for the all the responses.

Just based on what I see in the manual, the adjustment simply sets a range of motion. I looked at mine and the adjustment is different than the illustration in the manual. I would adjust it in the fastest forward speed position.

Okay, I have adjusted the speed and it works for going forward but it does not affect going backward.

Reverse requires the driven disc be moved to the other side of center of the driving disc than the side used for forward motion . There is an adjustment for this. Sounds like reverse 2 is on the correct side of center but reverse 1 is not. If manual gives adjustment for forward speed, adjust in opposite direction for reverse speed.

Okay, now that I have been adjusting the speed, reverse gear one is now going forward regardless if I move the speed adjustment up or down. My guess is it might have something to do with the gear shift and not the speed. How do I adjust gear shift so that gear one is pass the going forward?

Okay, thank you for all the help. I got it fixed. I found the information on page 17 of the manual "Adjustments -- Shift Cable". However, the information they have in that PDF is not exactly what is on my 3X HD 30" model. Nevertheless, I was able understand what it does and adjust mine. The model I have is not a cable but a metal rod that I have to adjust. It seems to work now.

Reverse 1 not working
I have the same problem with my cub cadet 3 stage. Reverse 1 not working, reverse2 is very slow. My model # is 31AH7DVX710. In see the rod and nut attached to the shift lever. Charlie which direction did you go to adjust? up or down?
Also this snowblower throws snow about 1/4 the distance of my 30 year old HONDA HS55.

I had a similar problem with a 2X cub cadet. Don't know if your problem is caused by the same thing, but this video helped show me what to do, and it worked

I have a 3X 30" HD in it's 2nd year. Last year shifting worked great not this year, every time I use it moving the shift handle gets harder to get into gear. I have to rock it back and forth to get it into gear. All adjustments shown on page 17 are correct. I know I have a 3 year warrantee but is there any info available so I can work on it myself? There is nothing in the manual that came with it.

Snow blowers have many linkages that create friction when operated. If these linkages are steel, they develop rust when not being used which increases friction. Have you followed the manual's lubrication schedule?
