Montgomery Wards tiller model GiL 1580 G

Trying to find the location to hook the governor spring on the Montgomery Wards tiller model GIL1580 G. I have been unable to find a manual for it with diagrams that would give me the location.

For something like that you can use trial and error. You have a limited number of places to attach the spring so it's not that difficult to try a spot and see if it could even work. You don't even need to start the engine and can tell by looking at how the choke moves.

I have an engine in the barn that matches the one with your numbers. Do you have one connecting point for the spring you are talking about? There are several springs connected to the carburetor, and to little rods that connect behind the fuel tank etc. Take a look at the diagrams for your engine at www.partstree.com, enter the 130202 number and select the type number in the menu. (you will have to go thru a lot of them to get to yours) You will be able to see a carburetor and controls photo that might help you, but it IS vague. If the one you see there is yours, it is also mine, and I will take a look for you on my engine.

Connection point

I have one connecting point on the governor lever. All other connecting points on the gs tank mounting frame appear to be lower than the lever.

Can you post a pic of your assembly? In the meantime, I will pull mine out and see what I can see. MIne is on a 5 hp Briggs, horizonal crankshaft, MTD chipper Carburetor has sliding controls for throttle and choke like the one that comes up; on Partstree with your model and type.

I have a 1963 Golfster with an 18 hp twin cylinder air cooled engine. I recently changed it over to an electronic ignition which is great, but I never retuned the carb as well as I should have. Too rich a mixture was fouling the plugs and I knew it, but was too busy to pull them out, so I paid for it yesterday. I can bring in the Briggs if you still need to know how to hook up the spring. Let me know!

The Briggs I have is your model number but a type # that starts with a 3 rather than a 400 series. If you look at the engine from the carb/ fuel tank side you cannot see the governor spring hook up, but if you tip it up you can see this: The governor rod comes out on your left and the tab catches a fat little spring that has a standard bend hook into the tab, and when installed is horizontal and goes to your right. On the end of the spring on THIS end it is elongated and stiff and bends into the shape of a paper clip. The spring end connects to a movable circular disc that moves a rod that goes vertically up to the carburetor. THIS lever is part of the fuel tank apparatus, not the engine. The small vertical rod goes up maybe 5 inches to the carburetor tab that opens the throttle butterfly. You HAVE to assemble the governor springs and rods with the engine on one side, and the fuel tank very close to it but not bolted to anything yet. It was a nightmare, but at least I took it apart and took pictures so I knew how to get it back. Unless your tiller is drastically different (and type difference) might make it so. I hope this helps you.

I looked at both my model and type and yours. The two appear to be constructed the same way. I do not have a source for complete parts breakdown for either one, but my description of the way the springs hook up between the engine and the fuel tank should be the same.

Thank you very much

I got it figured out yesterday. It’s running very good now. Thank you for your help. I use to work on my equipment all the time but as things became more sophisticated And parts for old equipment became impossible to find I quit. A friend pulled this tiller out and I decided to help. Afraid my memory isn’t what it use to be and the hook up eluded me. I did get it on correctly thanks to sitting back and leaving it alone for a couple of days then my memory kicked in. Again thanks for the help

Description

I’m my engine the spring drops down from the governor and hooks to a point slightly below the governor arm to a tab that moves down when the throttle is at full throttle.
