Lawnmower weakly vacuuming the grass

I have a 15+ y/o Toro standard 22-inch, 6hp, rear bagging and mulching mower. I have had no issues with it until this year when it stopped sucking up much off the grass that it is cutting. I find that after cutting the grass, I then have to make a second trip around the yard to pick up most of the cut grass. The grass is not wet and I have checked to make sure that the bag is fastened to the bag frame correctly. Also, made sure not to try to cut too much grass in one pass thinking it might be getting clogged up from grass where it exits the mower into the bag.

Not sure if the sucking ability degrades over time with these mulching mowers [or mowers in general] or if there is something specific that I can do, short of purchasing a new mower.

Thanks for any assistance you can provide.

If you want to suck up grass you want regular blades, not mulching blades.

Thanks, the blade is the one that came on it brand new and I have never had this issue before now.
Have only removed it to sharpen, but that was several years ago.

Maybe you need to clean the dried grass clippings off the deck.

The hinge rod on the lid can get bent as well. I've seen people put blades on upside down as well.

I agree with XSleeper that grass build-up underneath the deck can reduce the "suction" that the blades create. On my previous tractor (no deck wash option), I would remove the deck every 2 or 3 mowings and scrape out enough dried grass to fill two 5-gallon pails. I could tell the difference between a clean deck and a clogged deck in how well it dispersed the clippings (no bagger).

Make sure the blade is not on upside down. Have a good one. Geo

The blade may just be worn out. The lift portion of the blade is the part that wears off first.

Give the bag a thorough cleaning; the pores in the bag get clogged up and prevent good air flow through the bag, which causes poor bagging. Soak it in a solution of water and a little detergent (almost any kind will work) for a half hour or so, and then rinse it thoroughly with a hose, spraying from the outside in. Let it dry completely and then give it a go.
