Question ignition problem

I have a Sears (Tecumseh) 5.5hp Eager 1 (model # 143.975506) engine. I have recently done some repair work on it. I noticed that when I hold the sparkplug wire about 1/4" from the frame, I'll get a good 'healthly' blue spark. However, when I insert a sparkplug
(gapped at 0.030"), I'll get a very weak spark. Even with a new plug I get the same results. My magneto gap is set @ 0.0125". I have to push the primer bulb about 8 times to get the engine to start. Even when I let it run till it's hot and shut it off, I will always have to re-prime the engine (8 times) to get it to re-start. The carburator doesn't have a choke valve, only a primer bulb. Are these two problems related?

Try setting your air gap at the magneto at .010 inch. It's probably not what is causing your hard start though. The carb has a pickup tube that runs through the center of the post into the bowl of the carb. If that tube is plastic, pull it out and change the "o" rings on it. That will probably help your starting probs. Let us know how it goes!
