Question Crafstman Riding Mower Starter Question

My craftsman law mower starter is acting up. Basically, it is not spinning the pinion up to engage the motor gears. If I take the guard off of the starter and roll the starter and pinion it starts just fine.

An automobile engages the pinon with the gears on the flywheel with a solenoid, but this one must work by rotation. Do I need to lubricate the pinon gear sliding surface, or is the starter bad. I don't think anything is wrong with the battery, but I guess it is possible.

Help?

Common problem on Briggs motors. The white bendix that the gear is installed on can get dirty and cause this, or it can get worn and cause you problem too. Try cleaning the assembly with some carburetor cleaner...it cuts through the gunk. If it still doesn't work, you may need to replace the bendix and gear. There are 2 ways it can be attatched, one is by a roll pin pressed through the shaft, or by a clip on top of the shaft. The replacement kit is around $25.00, and the starter must be removed to replace it.
