valve lash

Hate to have to ask this, but just what is valve lash? Side to side play in the stem caused by worn guides, or up and down lag from too much gap in stem and lifter?

Valve lash is the distance between the valve stem and the lifter (or tappet in OHV engines). Over time, the valve seats farther down in the valve seat because of wear due to repeated opening and closing. This makes the valve lash less. If it gets too far, the valves won't close all the way...maybe just .002 of an inch, but enough to cause major running problems.
