quality paint

We just bought our first house and it needs alot of paint. We keep hearing that we should buy really good paint, but how do you know if it is good? Price? Has anyone ever used Ralph Lauren paint? Is it good? Any recommendations would be appreciated!!
Thanks!!

You can check paint ratings at Consumer Reports. In my painting days, however, I enjoyed using Benjamin Moore products. Lately I've been using Behr Paint with satisfaction. Behr can be found at the Home Depot Stores - which may or may not be in your area. Expect to pay $20 to $30 for a can of good interior paint.

go to a paint store...

Go to a paint store, not a big box. And yes, price is a good indicator. I gave up on Consumer Reports years ago. I've bougt a few of their "best buys" and was disappointed every time.

RL paints have a bad reputation, in part because of the difficulty in applying the suede, leather, and other faux finishes.

On this board there seems to be a difference of opinion on Behr paints. Some, like Tom thinks its a good buy. Others have had some bad experiences with it.

My personal recommendation: Sherwin-Williams, Pratt&Lambert, and Benjamin Moore. There are also some very good regional brands but none are in my area - I don't remember the names.

Of course the key is prep and quality tools. No paint will overcome cheap tools and bad prep, though some paints are more forgiving than others.

Just to let you know that I've just started using Behr Paint and so far I've had no problems - but that could change particularly since Bobf has recommended three other paints that I know are good products and so his hesitancy about using Behr is probably good advice.
