color washing

I have the sponging, ragging, and stenciling down, but I have been practicing on colorwashing and it does not seem to look very good. I have tried the brush with the softening brush, sponging with softening brush, etc. Is it possible that colorwashing is not appropriate for a smooth surface such as lightly orange peel texture? Does it work better on plaster or stucco. I need some help in a hurry. Any ideas would be appreciated. minzer
