Question Painting Business

I live in the northeast, and am thinking about doing some basic interior painting on the side for some extra cash. What would be a reasonable price for 2 coats of wall paint and 1 coat for the ceiling on a 15x15 living room. I don't want to beat anybody, and don't want to waste a real painter's time for a false estimate.

Im a painter and the going rate here in TN is 1.25 per sq ft.
So thats 225 for two caots. And the same for a normal small house 1000 to 1800 sq ft.The bigger the house the fantsier it will be more trim, 2 storeys and a better job. Most of the houses i do are around 3400 sq ft. 2 story including the garage. Most painters will do them for 1.25 though. But i charge 1.35 for that size thats just for the walls and basic trim.I charge extra for fire places, handrails and spindles, crown mold, basicaly anything you dont see in a 1000 sq ft that will require more time to do now i do this stuff alittle cheaper than if someone calls me to just do one item. But that will give you an idea for new construction. As long as theres no wild colors to cover i charge the same the same for repaints.Because i have to be careful over the carpet and such if there going to replace the carpet i will go cheaper.Or if i need the work. But in general i dont like repaints your always try to fix someone elses screw ups.
And i hate rolling ceilings it very hard on the back.So i charge acordeingly on that. The best covering longest lasting ceiling paint ive used is Poters Pro Vantage ceiling /wall flat paint ,its also the cheapest 35 dollars for a 5 gallon bucket.Dont use it on walls it sucks for that. But it covers ceilings like Kiltz. Its construction grade and they dont like to sell it to DIYs they will try to sell you something much higher. Most construction grade paint is better than the 30 dollar a gallon crap.I dont remember the the tint but if your going white just tell them to add a shot of black or what ever they recomend for the best coverage. They can doctor it up and it will still be white but cover better.Ive never had to use more then one coat, even covered water stains in my house.Yes with one coat.Go figure.I usally do mostly new construction so i spray the ceilings and can do a 2500 sq ft house in two thin coats in an hour so i usally only charge 150 to 200 for the hole house. But for have to roll one ceiling 15x15 id charge 75 for that one coat 120 for 2 coats.
Best easiest wall paint Is Farrell Calhouns Top grade flat and its washable.Yes it says so on the bucket it does have i very light sheen but looks like flat if your not a painter. It will touch up great even dark colors thats what i use mostly is darker colors for walls so finding something that will touch up 3 months or a year later is a pain. But this stuff will just save back some straight for touch up box atleast a half gallon of water in what your useing it will go on easier and smoother.55 dollars for 5 gallons. And when you tell the home owner there walls have washable paint on them. Its worth every penny. To watch there face light up they just love it.Plus strike one up for word of mouth and a repaint when they need it.
If you use porters wall paint good luck with touch up.But i have had sum good results with there PRO Flat brand.55 dollars a 5 though so id rather use Farrells.

Anyway that will give you an idea what a painter charges.I think a far price around here for a beginner.
Would be 75 for the ceilings one coat and 150 for the walls 2 coats and trim would be extra you would have to figure you materail cost and what you want an hr.
Thats materials and laber.I try to figure out odd jobs and extras like this 15 to 20 hr for myself and 12hr for one top employe i have most employees make 7 to10 an hr. plus materials.
But keep in mind i have been painting for 6 years and was trained by a slay driver that thought speed was a priority.
So i can cut and roll the walls and ceiling and be out the door in 3 or 4 hrs if it a dry warm day so the paint will dry.

By the way be careful on popcorn ceilings. If it hasnt been painted and some aint.It will come off if not done fast. You cant pacth it back and make it look good might be a free job if you mess it up.
Flat,Orange peel,or knock down is the same as walls it there to stay and want come off.

Well i know this is more than you wanted to know but i wanted you to know why painters charge so much. But yea we do make money i dont mind saying ive cleared atleast 50k for the last few years and was still off a lot but like i said most was new construction for contractors and you have to have liabilty insurance workmans comp. and all the hastle. If you do much work i would get the liabilty insurance it isnt that much mine is around 400 a year for myself. And one bucket of paint spille in carpet can cost much more than that.
P/S Latex will come up with a steam cleaner.$hit does happen.
Thats how i started extra money, then i went to work for a guy ,then bought everything from him 3 years latter because he burt out on it .And wanted to move.

That was long sorry about that and the spelling to many paint fumes.LOL
Your best bet would be to go to work for a painter if just for part time or weekend work theres a lot you can learn from a painter with years of experiance.I had painted about 15 aptments and thought i was a painter till i started working full time for a real painter. Then i discovered i didnt know jack. And was doing everything the hard way.And takeing way to long.2 bedroom singal story aptment would take me 4 days before after 6 years it takes me 10hrs for a 2bedroom 2 story townhouse walls and trim one coat.Huuggm you can sometimes find these to do for CASH no taxes.I got stuck doing them for 250 walls and 250 trim. But that is pretty good for apts. And im constently floaded with them.Genarally you cant make much from rental property.
They get old fast i dont do them anymore i give them to my help for extra money.Gives them something to do if we have a slow week. And i can go fishing.Im mean take care of some business.LOL
And this is a good place to start you can uaslly find aptment to paint.
Ok OK Ill shut up.LOL
