Angry Windows Painted Shut

Could someone please help....we bought a house recently that was built in 1880 and can you believe that the previous owners painted all the Kitchen windows shut. My hubby tried to take a hammer and chisel to it but only started chipping away at the wooden window frame and recking it. How in the world are we supposed to get these things open without completely ruining the window frame itself????? They are really stuck, I think there is like 10 coats of thick glossy paint on them..... AARRRGGGHHHH!!!

I replied with Mike (Old Guy) in the Windows section. Basically a very thin scraper is our recommendation. There is a serated window paint remover tool, but I find the thin scraper easier and less likely to chew the wood up.
