Question Painting thermofoil kitchen cabinets

I am planning to paint my 5-year old thermofoil white kitchen cabinets.

What products (primer, paint, tools) are recommended? Has anyone done this before and been happy/disappointed with the results?

Thanks!

What is a thermofoil cabinet? Compared to regular wooden cabinets?

Unhappy What thermofoil is...

Thermofoil is, in my uneducated opinion, like a plastic laminate that is supposedly durable. Mine have a slight "sandlike" texture on the front and are smooth on the interior. I think I am going to skip painting the inside except for where I am thinking about putting glass insets.

I have spoken with a Sherwin Williams salesperson who says they have a primer that works on plastic and laminate, so I am getting closer to thinking I am going to do this.

I would use a Zinsser 123 or other primer rated for plastic finishes. Since this will go over a hard surface such as plastic, an alkyd paint is the best choice since it will be hard, also. Be sure to consider the times recommended by the manufacturers of the primers and paints for their achieving proper durability and hardness for this project. Since the paint is going to be applied to a plastic finish, chipping will be the most likely failure during use.

Of course, make sure the surfaces are clean before you start.
