painting over glossy paint coat?

I am repainting my bathroom. The wall were wallpapers (now bare wall), but the ceiling has this thick glossy paint like everybody has in their bathroom or kitchen.

What is the process to paint over that? Is there some kind of primer I can get that will adhere to it? Can I use the same primer for the bare walls? Please don't tell me I have to sand my ceilings??!

Zinsser 123 and other primers are formulated for priming over clean, glossy surfaces. Follow the directions on the can. I have found that it works well.
