Hello redrock,
Painting a concrete floor is relatively easy and straightforward. You would have to clean the floor and allow sufficient drying time. Use any commercial cleaner, and it may take two or three cleanings. Be certain to remove any oily or greasy areas. Use a paint specifically labeled for concrete and roll it on. Just make sure to not paint yourself into a corner! Staining concrete is much more intensive. The chemicals involved are much more unpredictable and therefore, it is advisable to have a professional evaluate your room. The color from staining will not always be a perfect match to the sample since the concrete's age and moisture content affect how the stain 'takes'. So even a professional will not be able to guarantee a color match with staining. Stained concrete lasts much longer than paint and the colors - in my opinion - are much warmer and nicer, due to the depth perceived by staining than paint. There are a lot more color choices available in concrete paint now than in previous years. Paint is cheaper (you still may be shocked at how expensive it can get) but staining is permanent and lasts longer. Let us know what you decide and how things turn out!
